2008 Revised Budget for the University of Adelaide

I am pleased to present the 2008 Revised Budget for the University of Adelaide, approved by Council on 30 June 2008.

Following successive years of strong growth in both student numbers and revenue, the University Council reaffirmed the need for the University to continue to grow towards sustainability. The 2008 Revised Budget and the Strategic Plan 2008-2012 'Building a Great Research University' reflect this decision.

The higher education environment is becoming increasingly competitive. Despite this, the University of Adelaide has continued to attract high quality students both locally and internationally against the national trend and has again performed admirably in attracting competitive research grants. The 2008 Revised Budget seeks to maintain this momentum by providing funds which will improve the University as both a working and a learning environment.

The 2008 Revised Budget pursues the following key targets:

  • To provide investment necessary for growth, quality and impact and reduce the backlog of maintenance;
  • To maintain underlying operating performance relative to the Go8;
  • To ensure staff costs are sustainable;
  • To continue stability and transparency of funding allocations.

The 2008 Revised Budget achieves an operative result of $62.5m ($43.9m in the original budget), an operating margin of 11.1% and salaries are maintained as a stable percentage of total expenditure. These outcomes are vital elements to our continuing sustainability.
