This seminar is designed to help staff in administrative and teaching positions learn to use the University desktop templates to enhance the look of their documents. The seminar will cover the following:

• How to install them on your computer.
• Some 'Visual Identity' guidelines.
• Some differences for Mac and PC users.
• Modifying the templates for your area.
• Using the letterhead template.
• Formatting a flier.
• Creating certificates with mail merge.
• Streamlining a series with styles.
• Covers, forms, Powerpoint slides and other templates.
• Some layout ideas for non-designers.
• Help with hiccups.

Developing transferable professional writing skills within PhD programs and research workplaces: a collaborative genre-based approach and its implications for research education (pdf 261kB)

In this seminar I use evaluation data from paper-writing workshops presented in research workplaces in China and Australia, and in University of Adelaide departments, to draw out implications for the development of desirable graduate attributes within research education. Based on a paper presented at the International Conference on University Learning and Teaching held at Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia, October 14-15, 2002.

Plagiarism or language development? (ppt 201kB)

Plagiarism has been much in the news of late, but the term is a very rubbery one. It embraces the two extremes of outright cheating on the one hand, and the lack of language for appropriate citing on the other. This session examines ways of assisting students in re-using the language of their readings without plagiarising. First presented at the ELSE/ ACTA conference in January 2002.
