Human Research Ethics Workshop for Researchers

The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) presented a Human Research Ethics Workshop on Thursday 27 July 2006 at the Radisson Playford Hotel, North Terrace.

This half-day workshop was designed for both established researchers and newly commencing research postgraduates whose research work involves human participants. The format was a mixture of brief presentations and case study discussion.

Speakers were: Associate Professor Annette Braunack-Mayer; Associate Professor Garrett Cullity; Associate Professor Ian Richards and Associate Professor Wendy Rogers. All four are members of the Research and Education Committee of the Ethics Centre of South Australia.

The programme included presentations on the following topics:

  • History of ethical scrutiny of research

  • Overview of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans, and Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research

  • The ethics application process:
    • University of Adelaide
    • University of South Australia
    • Flinders University
  • Strategies for working effectively with Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs)
