Collections and locations in the Library Catalogue

The University of Adelaide Library system comprises a number of libraries each of which contains individual collections.
On any Library Catalogue record the Location line tells you in which of the University of Adelaide Libraries you will find the item. Immediately following the name of the Library is the name of the collection in that Library where the item is located. Examples are: Barr Smith Main collection; Waite Journals; Law Books, and so on.
This page provides brief descriptions of the different collections you are likely to come across in Catalogue records, with links to more information when it is available.

Chemistry Dept
For access to books and journals with the Location: Chemistry Dept, contact the School of Chemistry and Physics Office.

Current journals collection (Barr Smith Library, Level 3 North)map
single issues of journals are kept here until there are enough to make up a bound volume (usually one years' issues). When they have been bound they are shelved in the Main collection.

EUi collection
Monographs of the European Union are all classified at 337.142
Serial material, including the Bulletin of the European Union, annual reports and statistics, are all classified at 337.14205

Geographical and Environmental Studies Dept
For access to items with the Location: Geographical and Environmental Studies Dept, contact the Geographical and Environmental Studies Office.

Joint Library Store
Some older and little-used items are kept in an off-campus store known as the Joint Library Store or Universities' Research Repository - South Australia (URRSA). Members of the University of Adelaide community can ask for items to be paged to any of the University Libraries by using the Requests facility on the Library Catalogue. If you are not a staff member or student of the University of Adelaide, items may be paged by filling in a Joint Store Request card.

Main collection
Nearly all of the Barr Smith Library's books and journals are shelved in the Main collection on Levels 1 and 2, in one call number sequence. If you are not sure where to go, our Locating material in the Barr Smith Library page will show you how to find books and journals on the Library shelves.

Map collection
Information about the Library's Map collection is on the Reference guides for all subjects page.

Microforms
Microfilms and microfiche are part of the Multimedia collection.map

Multimedia collectionmap
Location: Barr Smith Library, Level 3 South. In the Multimedia collection you'll find the Library's collections of materials such as microforms, multimedia CDs, DVDs, videocassettes, audiocassettes, slides, films and so on.

New booksmap
Location: Barr Smith Library, Level 3 South. New books added to the Barr Smith Library collections are displayed for one week on special shelves on Level 3 South, near the Services desk. They may not be borrowed but you can place Requests through the Library Catalogue.
We maintain lists of new books that have been added to the Barr Smith and branch libraries, for both the current week and previous weeks.

Newspapersmap
Location: Barr Smith Library, Level 3 South. Newspaper issues from the last few days are kept on the Today's newspapers shelves on the far end of Level 3 South of the Barr Smith Library, adjacent to the International lounge. The most recent issue of each title is on display on the upper shelves; issues from the previous few days are filed on the flat shelves immediately below the display shelves.
The latest three months or so of newspapers are kept behind the Reserve and Multimedia desk on Level 3 South. Older newspapers are usually on microfilm and are available from the Multimedia collection map- ask at the Reserve and Multimedia desk on Level 3 South.

Oversize collectionmap
Location: Barr Smith Library, Level 2 North. Books that are too large to fit on the normal shelves are kept in a separate collection outside the Barr Smith Reading Room.

Reference collectionmap
Location: Barr Smith Library, Level 3 South. The Reference collection contains such things as encyclopaedias, dictionaries, indexes and abstracts, atlases and bibliographies. Items may not be borrowed.

Reserve collectionmap
Barr Smith Library, Level 3 South a collection of items that are in very heavy demand, mainly because they are mentioned on reading lists.

Schulz collection
Books and other items identified in the Catalogue with the Location Schulz collection are held in the Schulz Library, Education Building, Level 8, 10 Pulteney Street. They are available for loan only to staff and students of the School of Education, unless otherwise authorised. Access to the collection may be obtained by contacting the School secretary.

Special collectionsmap
Location: Barr Smith Library, Level 4 South. Houses rare books, the Pacific and Theatre collections and the University collection. Special collections is also responsible for our Digitised collections. Books from Special collections may be used only in the Library.

Law (Law Library)
The Law Library occupies the lower two floors of the Ligertwood (Law School) Building, part of the North Terrace Campus of the University of Adelaide. The primary purpose of the Library is to support the teaching and research of the Faculty of Law. The collection contains around 120 000 volumes, including textbooks, law reports, statutes, parliamentary papers, journals, reference material and the International Law collection.

Music (Elder Music Library)
The Elder Music Library is located in Hartley Building, Kintore Avenue, on the North Terrace Campus. It holds around 30 000 books and subscribes to 150 current journals in the areas of music, drama and dance.

Roseworthy (Roseworthy Campus Library)
The Roseworthy Campus Library is located approximately 50 kilometres north of Adelaide and 12 kilometres from the nearest main town of Gawler. Major strengths of the collection include agriculture, animal sciences and agronomy and farming systems. The collection is a significant agricultural research facility and supports the research and teaching of the Faculty of Sciences, formed in 2002 by the amalgamation of the Faculty of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and the Faculty of Science.

Waite (Waite Library)
The Waite Library is located at the Waite Campus at Urrbrae, eight kilometres south-east of Adelaide. Major strengths of the collection include agriculture, plant biotechnology and breeding, plant pathology, horticulture, soil sciences, viticulture and wine science. The collection is a significant agricultural research facility and supports the research and teaching of the Faculty of Sciences, formed in 2002 by the amalgamation of the Faculty of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and the Faculty of Science.
