The Answers

MyUni Background

What is MyUni?

MyUni is a centrally managed service to support the online delivery of courses at the University of Adelaide. The MyUni service:

  • Is primarily used for flexible delivery (ie. to enhance, but not replace, existing face to face teaching),
  • Can facilitate the delivery of online distance education courses, and
  • Can be used for development programs for staff and students (occupational health and safety courses and library skills tutorials are examples of these programs that are already on MyUni)

The MyUni service has 3 key components;

  • A course management and content creation tool that allows course instructors to create and deliver courses via the internet. This system provides a personalised view of courses and organisations for all users based on their role and relationship to the University.
  • Support services that include the Helpdesk for MyUni (the first IT helpdesk for students, staffed between 8am-12pm from the 25th of February) and other web-based help for instructors and students.
  • A quality program that includes hands on training for staff, ongoing evaluation, monitoring and user feedback.

Every academic course taught by the University will have a website in MyUni. Although some instructors may choose not to use MyUni, students will have access to the websites of all of their courses.

What is the difference between MyUni and Blackboard?

MyUni is the brand name of the service that has been created by the University of Adelaide that incorporates the centrally managed software and hardware, support and development programs. The name has been chosen deliberately so that independence is maintained from the name of the course management software used for delivering the service. MyUni is managed through a partnership between the Centre for Learning and Professional Development (formerly the ACUE) and Information Technology Services.

Blackboard is the name of the course management software that is used to provide the MyUni service.

How does MyUni interface with other IT systems?

The Course Management System provided by the University enables:

  • authentication against University directory services, and
  • the automation of user, course and enrolment management through an interface with the Student Administration System.

Staff and students login to MyUni with the same username and password that is used for e-mail, web proxy, calendar and dialup services.

MyUni receives a daily extract of people, courses and enrolments from the Student Administration System. These files are loaded into MyUni every morning from Monday to Friday.

Loading these files into MyUni automatically creates or updates staff and student accounts, course details, enrolments of students and assignment of instructors to courses.

The LMS interface greatly reduces the amount of manual work that would otherwise have to be performed by ITS and area staff, to create courses, assign instructors to courses and then enrol students to courses.

How do I merge courses?

Instructors can nominate multiple courses that can be combined into a single course in MyUni where student cohorts are usually taught together or where off-shore course content is identical to local content (eg for SIT). To register a request for a course combination please contact the Helpdesk for MyUni on (08) 8303 3335 or e-mail myuni.help@adelaide.edu.au. Details about merged courses are stored in the Student Administration System and uploaded into MyUni every night from Monday to Friday.

Where do I get help from?

If you are a student with a query about specific course content, contact your lecturer first. If you have difficulty with access or other student IT services, contact the Helpdesk for MyUni on (08) 8303 3335 or e-mail .myuni.help@adelaide.edu.au.

If you are a member of staff that requires assistance with copyright, accessibility, training or evaluation, contact the Centre for Learning and Professional Development.

I'm logged into MyUni but I'm having problems

If you experience problems once you have accessed MyUni then they could be related to the web browser you are using. Check the following:

  1. You will need a web browser (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) that is version 4.0 or higher.
  2. Your browser should be configured to accept cookies that get sent back to the originating server.

Can students preview a quiz if I disable the "Multiple Attempts" option?

If you have a MyUni quiz set so that the students are not allowed multiple attempts, then they will not be able to preview the quiz. Simply opening the quiz counts as completing it. As a result, it is advisable that instructors, who choose to diable the "Multiple Attempts" option, warn their students not to open the quiz unless they are going to complete it immediately.

What affects do system failures (eg. computer freezing, internet disconnection, network failure, etc.) have during a quiz?

If the "Multiple Attempts" option has been disabled then most types of system failures will result in an undertaken quiz being counted as completed, even if the quiz was not actually completed and a submission was not made. However, if the "Multiple Attempts" option has not been disabled, and a student previews or undertakes a quiz, then most types of system failures will result in a red exclamation mark or question mark appearing in the Gradebook next to that particular student. Instructors who choose to enable the "Multiple Attempts" option are advised to use the results from a student's first completed quiz in the Gradebook for assessment purposes.
