Construction & Design: Theories & Practice - 2008
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the theory and practice of building. This course extends students’ knowledge of the ‘design process’ into the realm of construction.
‘How buildings and landscapes are constructed’ is investigated through the development of a small-scale structure on a real site. Students participate in the design process from initial briefing (with their Client), through site visits, site analysis, design development, Working Drawing documentation (as Designer), and construction (by their Builder).
So far students have visited their real world site and performed a measure-up and analysis of their specific area. They have made physical models of the site for which they are designing and begun to develop their designs (on view in Galleries East and West).
The course introduces students to materials and materiality, structural behaviour and construction techniques (timber and steel), and a small planting palette (including plant performance, behaviour, form and maintenance).

Designing Designers: the evolution of an architect retrospective

Exhibition open: 10:00am-4:00pm

Location: Level 5 foyer space, Architecture Building

The Designing Designers exhibition was mounted to celebrate the School’s 50th Anniversary and premiered at this year’s Fringe Festival in the Visual Arts program. The exhibition showcases student work from 1958 until the present, drawn from the School’s archives, and also includes snapshots of their contemporary work.

Extreme Scheme: a live art project

Contemplate or get involved from 10:00am-4:00pm

Location: Display Room, Level 4, Architecture Building (G8), Hughes Plaza

The Extreme Scheme will feature a 10-metre long tableau of cardboard structures to be built by students during Open Day. In line with course objectives, this tableau will explore movements of 20th Century Architecture and Landscape Architecture as an exercise in mass scale, proportion and materiality.

Ephemeral Intervention: a Landscape Architecture project installation

Location: Professions Marquee, Ligertwood Plaza

This intervention provides an insight into an innovative design studio undertaken in the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. The students will be preparing an installation that is inspired by its place in the landscape. Such installations are undertaken in the design studio Landscape Narratives which is a first year elective course in the Bachelor of Design Studies. Model making and experimental design are key components in the design process and this is just one example of the ‘hands-on’ approach to place-making.
