Faculty News & AwardsNovember 2008 Margaret Castles, Andrew Ligertwood, Anne Hewitt, Cornelia Koch and Matthew Stubbs, who teach in the final year suite of law courses, have been awarded the 2008 Stephen Cole the Elder Prize for excellence in teaching. Individuals or teams winning this award represent some of the most talented and dedicated individuals working at the University. The same team were awarded the 2008 Executive Dean of the Professions' Prize for Excellence in Teaching earlier this year.
University of Adelaide graduate Benedict Coxon has been named South Australia's Rhodes Scholar for 2009. Graduating in August of this year with an Honours Degree of Bachelor of Laws (First Class), Benedict is currently working as an Associate to Federal Court Justice The Hon. Anthony Besanko. Benedict plans to use his Rhodes Scholarship to study for a D.Phil (PhD) in Laws at the University of Oxford from next year. Pascale and Associate Professor Terry Williamson presented the awards at a celebration for all staff of the Law School and School of Education.
Brendan Lim will commence a Master of Laws at Yale University in August, supported by the General Sir John Monash Award, George Murray Scholarship and Law Foundation of South Australia Fellowship. He will be the only Australian in the class of 29, studying a range of subjects including federal constitutional law, administrative law, privacy law and jurisprudence. Brendan graduated from the Law School with First Class Honours, winning all of the honours prizes and the Stow Medal. He has two further undergraduate degrees from the University of Adelaide: Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. His future professional plans include doctoral studies, legal practice and law teaching. Read more about Brendan from the University News website. ![]() March 2008 March 17th marked the 50th anniversary of the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. The occasion was celebrated with a cake design competition, which staff, students and industry affiliates took part in. The cake pictured is titled “1:50th Scale Rule” by students Kimberley Hubber and Will Harbison, who won the “Most Representative of the School” award. Business School PhD student Vinh Lu received an Honourable Mention in the 2007 Dissertation Support Award Competition run by Penn State University’s Institute for the Study of Business Markets.
Commerce/Law student Glenn Smith has been awarded one of five prestigious Order of Australia Association Foundation Scholarships for 2008. Each year the Foundation sponsors Scholarships to young Australian students in their early years of tertiary study, and offers scholarship recipients the opportunity of an ongoing mentor relationship with a member of the OAAF who has professional experience in the student’s chosen career. November 2007 Stefanie Wilkins, who graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Law in 2006, has been awarded a Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Fellowship in Law. From 40 applicants from across Australia, Stefanie was selected as one of two successful recipients of a Fellowship. The Selection Committee was chaired by the Hon Sir Daryl Dawson (Menzies Foundation Chairman, and former Justice of the High Court) and members were the Hon Justice Susan Kenny (Federal Court and previous Menzies Scholar), Professor Michael Bryan (University of Melbourne) and Ms Tracy Harris (representing the Department of Education, Science and Training). Stefanie will read for the BCL at The University of Oxford in the academic year commencing October 2008. Stefanie, who is currently Associate to the Honourable Justice Sulan of the Supreme Court of SA, also holds a First Class Honours Degree in Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from The University of Adelaide. Read more about Stefanie from the University News website. ![]() November 2007 The School of Commerce Teaching Development Committee has awarded Dr Carolin Plewa $2000 and a certificate to be presented at the CPA Australia School of Commerce Graduation Dinner. This year saw the highest number of applications in the award's history, and the Selection Committee was unanimous in their view that all applications were of a very high standard.
