Program Outline

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is globally accepted as the degree which provides most flexibility for students, while equipping them with the skills base essential for many careers. The choice of courses available in the BA is extensive, and this is reflected in the list of possible majors. We aim to accommodate students with both specific study interests and career plans and also those who want to sample new disciplines and explore associated employment opportunities. Students have complete control throughout their degree, with expert guidance on appropriate course selection available at all times.

Music programs provide the intensive professional training required for employment in the music industry. They seek to provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment in which all students may achieve their full potential. They develop educated, flexible and imaginative graduates who possess the knowledge and skills required to function effectively in a wide range of professional contexts.

The Bachelor of Music Education combines a study of music with a major study in music teaching.  Graduates are able to apply for registration as a secondary school teacher in South Australia.

The combined degree Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Music Education comprises completion of the Bachelor of Music Education (96 units) plus selected Level I, II and III Arts courses (52 units) to finalise the Bachelor of Arts program. It enables students to pursue a broad range of interests in music and the arts in a self-designed, integrated academic program. The study of foreign languages is of particular significance to vocalists and musicologists, while history or anthropology may be of particular interest to an ethnomusicologist. Various media studies may also be of interest to Composition and Music Technology majors.

Domestic

Selection criteria:	Year 12 applicants You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You are eligible to compete with either HESS (Higher Education Selection Subjects) General (HESS G) or HESS Restricted (HESS R). You must have gained a 'Recorded Achievement' in four SACE Stage 2 HESS G or HESS R subjects (or interstate/International Baccalaureate equivalents). For a full list of SACE subjects and their HESS status please refer to the SATAC Tertiary Entrance Booklet. You must also undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. Your year 12 Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) is used in the case of a tie-breaker. This program may not be deferred. Higher Education applicants You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent higher education study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You must also undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. Your best GPA is used in the case of a tie-breaker. This program may not be deferred. VET applicants You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above in a Music program. You must also undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. Further ranking according to the level of VET award is undertaken in the case of a tie-breaker. This program may not be deferred. Special Entry applicants You must be 21 years or over on January 1st of the year that you will be studying*. You must undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. In the case of a tie-breaker, you will be ranked further according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Personal Competencies (PC) and Employment Experience (EE) statements are not considered. *The age restriction is 19 years or over if you have completed either the Flinders Foundation course or the UniSA Foundation Studies program or the UniSA Program for Adult Learners. Assumed knowledge:	Year 12 Solo Performance or at least Grade 6-7 AMEB practical, plus Year 12 Musicianship or AMEB Grade 5 Theory.

Additional entry requirements:	Entry is subject to satisfactory audition. All applicants for instrumental or vocal place are required to prepare contrasting works, with a total duration of 10-15 minutes. Applicants must submit an audio recording (preferable in CD format) or video recording (videotape in PAL or NTSC format, VCD, or DVD).
