Graduate Certificate in Nursing Science (Hyperbaric Nursing)

Hyperbaric Nursing equips graduates with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to participate in and manage patients receiving hyperbaric therapy. Particular emphasis is placed on safety issues surrounding working in a facility with either monoplace or multiplace chambers.
Hyperbaric Nursing provides graduates with rigorous grounding in attending and managing patients within a hyperbaric facility necessary to provide comprehensive treatment for a significant number of clinical conditions such as wound healing and decompression illness within hyperbaric facilities. Students will also graduate with a sound knowledge and understanding of hyperbaric patient assessment and anatomy and physiology as they relate to the hyperbaric patient.

Hyperbaric Nursing I
Teaching period: Semester 1 or Semester 2
This course examines nursing and medical science in relation to the indications for Hyperbaric Nursing and the physical psychosocial needs of those undergoing hyperbaric treatment. Topics include anatomy, physiology, psychosocial care, physics, hyperbaric patient assessment, hyperbaric technical skills, safety and patient education. Students are required to participate in supervised field experience at the Royal Adelaide Hospital Hyperbaric Unit for 40 hours.
Hyperbaric Nursing II
Teaching period: Semester 1 or Semester 2
This course will build on the topics considered in Hyperbaric Nursing I and will be studied by flexible learning mode. Topics will include safety issues relating to Hyperbaric Nursing and advanced clinical issues such as unit management and monitoring patient outcomes.
Students undertaking this plan are required to be working in a Hyperbaric facility.
