Admission to the University

Entry Requirements for Postgraduate Research Students

In order to gain admission to most postgraduate research programs in the University of Adelaide, it is necessary to have qualified for a four-year Australian university Honours degree (first or second class, division A Honours) or the equivalent from an approved overseas university. Some faculties may require students to enrol as a candidate for a Masters degree in the first instance, with the possibility of upgrading to a Ph.D at a later date if progress is deemed to be satisfactory.

All research projects conducted as part of these academic programs require the approval of the relevant faculty.

Prospective students will find a more detailed account of the various postgraduate academic programs in the University of Adelaide Calendar - Handbook of Postgraduate Programs.

Higher Degrees by Research at the University of Adelaide

Currently all commencing "local" higher degree by research students at the University of Adelaide are awarded a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place. The RTS place entitles the student to a maximum period of four years of tuition fee exempt candidature to undertake a PhD program or two years of tuition fee exempt candidature to undertake a Masters program. This means there is no HECS debt at the end of the program.
"local" includes Australian citizens or permanent residents and New Zealand citizens.

Student Services Fees

Students may elect to join the Adelaide University Union (AUU), the peak student representative body at the University. By joining, students will assist the AUU to develop and implement the philosophy that life at university is so much more than textbooks and lectures. In addition, students will be able to access a range of discounts covering gym membership, prices at commercial outlets on campus, textbooks and participation in a comprehensive range of activities of the Students' Association, Clubs Association and Sports Association.

The current semester membership fee for the AUU is $99 (GST inclusive).

Non-award Studies

Students who enrol in courses not required for the completion of their program may be required to pay non-award fees. The rates for these fees will be available from the Student Centre.

Postgraduate Research Induction

Each year in late February/early March and late July the Graduate Centre runs an induction program for commencing higher degree by research students.

Application Forms

Application forms for admission to research degrees are available from the Student Centre, the Graduate Centre or the University web site. The same application form can be used to apply for a scholarship.
