Welcome to the School of Psychology

The Department of Psychology was first established in 1956 under the direction of Doctor Arthur Meadows. Prior to this Psychology was first taught in 1896 by Professor William Mitchell under ‘Logic and Psychology’, taught in the faculty of Arts as part of a Master of Arts Degree. Today the subject Psychology can be taken in eight different undergraduate degree programs. The Department's first three Honours students graduated in 1960/61, compared to 45 Honours students who graduated in 2006. Our first Professor, Malcolm Jeeves, was appointed in 1959. Since then the Department has had nine Professors, with Deborah Turnbull being the first appointed female Professor and Chair of Psychology. Psychology became a School within the Faculty of Health Sciences from 2006, and is currently led by Deborah Turnbull.
