The third-oldest university in Australia, the University of Adelaide became the first Australian university (and also preceded English institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge) to admit women to academic courses in 1881. Adelaide was also the first Australian university to grant degrees in Science and establish a Conservatorium of Music.
